92-Year-Old War Hero Cries Tears of Joy Meeting Lion Cubs for First Time

Jim Albert, a 92-year-old World War II veteran from Canada, has lived a life defined by courage, compassion, and service. Serving in the British Army, he was wounded three times in battle, each injury a reminder of the sacrifices he made for his country. But beyond the battlefield, Jim’s greatest legacy may be one of healing—through the unconditional love of animals.

Fifty years ago, Jim founded the Saint John Ambulance Therapy Dog Movement, a program that pairs gentle, loving dogs with people in need of comfort. What began as a small initiative has grown into a nationwide movement, touching the lives of thousands. The therapy dog teams visit hospitals, retirement homes, care facilities, schools, and universities, bringing warmth and companionship to those who need it most. In 2015 alone, more than 3,300 volunteers gave over 230,000 hours of service to over 120,000 people.

Despite being a lifelong animal lover and dedicating his life to promoting the emotional bond between humans and animals, Jim had never been to a zoo. That surprising fact moved the staff at Bowmanville ZOO in Ontario to do something extraordinary. They planned a heartfelt surprise: a private encounter with some of the zoo’s youngest and most adored residents—lion cubs.

As Jim sat quietly, a lion cub was brought to him, accompanied by its handler. At first, the young lion appeared uninterested, pacing gently and keeping its distance. But then, in a moment that melted every heart in the room, the cub stood on its hind legs and leaned into Jim, wrapping its body into the arms of the aging veteran. The moment was tender, sincere, and overwhelming.

Jim, taken aback, instinctively embraced the cub. Tears welled in his eyes as he held the animal close, the decades of his life seemingly folding into this single, pure exchange. But the emotional journey wasn’t over.

The zoo staff then introduced him to two tiny cubs, only a few weeks old. As they were placed in his lap, Jim’s expression transformed into one of sheer, childlike joy. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he gently petted their soft fur, visibly overcome by the experience.

After decades spent giving comfort to others, Jim finally received a moment of healing and happiness for himself. The joy on his face was radiant. For a man who has given so much, this unforgettable experience was a small but meaningful return of the love he’s shared with the world.
