For 13 years, Officer Bai Yan served in the Chinese police force, working alongside many loyal K9s who dedicated their lives to service. These dogs helped track criminals, locate missing people, and protect their handlers, putting their lives on the line just as human officers do. Bai Yan, like many others, assumed that after retirement, these brave K9s would go on to live peaceful, happy lives, finally able to experience the carefree existence of a pet dog.
But when he learned the harsh reality of what happened to most retired police dogs, he was appalled. Instead of being adopted into loving homes, many were neglected, left to starve, or even euthanized. The very dogs that had served with unwavering loyalty were simply discarded, their years of hard work forgotten.
Bai Yan knew he couldn’t allow this injustice to continue.
Determined to change the fate of these deserving dogs, he took it upon himself to provide them with a safe and loving place to live. Using one million yuan (about $150,000) of his own money, Bai Yan built a retirement sanctuary specifically for former K9 officers. This one-of-a-kind facility ensures that these dogs receive the care, attention, and respect they deserve after a lifetime of service.
Since opening the sanctuary, 26 dogs have found a second chance under Bai Yan’s care. Here, they have access to proper food, medical care, and a comfortable environment—something they may never have experienced after leaving the force.
One particularly incredible story from the sanctuary is that of a retired K9 who was diagnosed with cancer. Veterinarians had given up hope, assuming there was nothing that could be done. But Bai Yan refused to accept that fate. Through dedicated care, a proper diet, and constant attention, the dog miraculously beat cancer and continues to enjoy a happy, healthy life today.
Even after retiring from the police force himself, Bai Yan has made caring for these forgotten heroes his full-time mission. He spends most of his days feeding, training, and comforting the dogs, ensuring they feel safe, loved, and valued.
His incredible efforts serve as a powerful reminder that these brave K9s are more than just working dogs—they are heroes who deserve a dignified retirement.
