The dog, later named Josephine—or Pheenie—had endured unimaginable hardships. Left behind when her owner was deported, Pheenie was forced to fend for herself in a harsh and unforgiving environment.
Tragically, her life on the streets had taken a heavy toll. Rescuers learned that Pheenie had lost one of her eyes after being struck by a truck, and she had never received medical attention for her injuries. Despite her painful past, she showed remarkable resilience and a gentle spirit.
When the rescue team arrived, they knew they needed to proceed with patience and care. They offered her treats, speaking softly and giving her time to trust them. Slowly, they placed a gentle snare around her neck and carefully guided her out of the only home she had known.
Once at the hospital, the full extent of Pheenie’s health issues became clear. The senior dog’s teeth were broken and rotten, she suffered from discospondylitis, and she was battling a urinary tract infection. But Pheenie’s new life was just beginning, thanks to L.A. Animal Rescue, which stepped in to foster her for the remainder of her days.
During her final months, Pheenie experienced what she had been denied for so long—love, comfort, and companionship. She made new friends, received endless affection, and enjoyed the simple joys of life as a cherished pet. She became a beloved member of her foster family, spending her days surrounded by warmth and care.
Five months after her rescue, Pheenie passed away peacefully by the fireplace, her final moments filled with love and peace. While her story is bittersweet, it’s comforting to know that her last chapter was filled with the kindness and dignity she deserved all along.
