A Horse’s Journey from Pain to Peaceful Sanctuary

For years, Pride, a majestic Tennessee Walking Horse, endured unimaginable suffering in the name of competition. He was a victim of “soring,” a cruel practice that deliberately inflicts pain to exaggerate a horse’s natural gait for show purposes. The agony he endured was hidden beneath layers of training and performances, all for the sake of a coveted blue ribbon.

Pride’s life changed forever when he was rescued by the Humane Society of the United States. His handlers, who had inflicted this cruelty upon him, were held accountable and successfully prosecuted. Pride’s rescue not only symbolized justice for him but also cast a spotlight on the ongoing abuse within the Tennessee walking horse show industry.

Today, Pride lives a life of peace and freedom at Black Beauty Ranch. The sprawling sanctuary, with its lush fields and tranquil surroundings, offers a stark contrast to the grim conditions he once knew. Watching him run freely, his mane flowing in the wind and his spirit unbroken, is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Pride’s resilience and joy serve as a testament to the healing power of compassion.

However, Pride’s story is not unique, and countless horses remain trapped in this cycle of cruelty. The Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act aims to change that. This critical legislation would amend the Horse Protection Act to eliminate the system of industry self-policing, ban the devices integral to soring, and enforce stricter penalties for those who continue this inhumane practice.

The fight to protect these beautiful animals is far from over, but Pride’s journey reminds us of what’s possible when cruelty is replaced with kindness. His story is a powerful call to action for a future where no horse suffers for a ribbon.
