When Hope For Paws received a report about a tiny Chihuahua abandoned on the streets, rescuers JoAnn and Katie immediately set out to help. The little dog had been seen sitting alone beside a cardboard box, a heartbreaking reminder that she had nowhere to go and no one to care for her.
Upon arriving at the location, JoAnn and Katie spotted the small, scared Chihuahua, her fragile body curled up near the box that had likely been her only source of shelter. She had been living on the streets for at least a week, according to neighbors, and it was clear she had been fending for herself the entire time.
The poor pup didn’t trust anyone, keeping her distance from people who tried to approach. But there was one thing that caught her attention—food. Knowing this could be the key to gaining her trust, JoAnn pulled out a cheeseburger, hoping it would help bring the Chihuahua closer.
Slowly but surely, the smell of the cheeseburger lured the little dog forward. She took cautious steps, sniffing the air as she inched toward JoAnn, her hunger overpowering her fear. With careful patience, JoAnn continued offering small bites of food, allowing the pup to feel safe enough to get within reach.
When the moment was right, JoAnn gently used a humane snare to secure the Chihuahua, making sure she was finally safe from the dangers of street life. Though she was initially nervous, the little dog soon realized she was in good hands.
As they spoke with a neighbor, JoAnn and Katie learned that he had been leaving food out for the dog for about a week. He had even given her a name—Frijoles.
Now that Frijoles was safe, it was time for the next step in her journey. The rescuers rushed her to the hospital, where she received a full medical checkup and a much-needed bath. As warm water washed away the dirt from her fur, Frijoles began to relax, as if she finally understood that her life was about to change for the better.
After receiving care, Frijoles was placed in a foster home through LA Animal Rescue. It didn’t take long before she won the hearts of a loving family, who welcomed her into their home with open arms.
Now, instead of scavenging for food and shelter, Frijoles spends her days cuddled up with her new family, knowing she is truly loved.
